Malta: tax, pay and borrowing explained
Compare the seven 2026 resident tax schedules, plan pay using confirmed payroll deductions, and explore VAT and borrowing costs in euros.
Rules reviewed 24 October 2026. These tools are planning estimates within the stated scope.
Choose a schedule before comparing salaries
Malta has seven resident schedules in the 2026 calculator. The standard single, married and parent schedules remain available, alongside child-related married and parent schedules. The new family schedules should not be selected from child count alone: custody, the child’s age or education, residence and nationality or long-term residence affect eligibility. Confirm your schedule with MTCA before treating a lower estimate as money available to spend.
Check the taxable base
Gross employment cash and chargeable income are not always the same. Enter only deductions that you have confirmed are allowable for your circumstances. The calculator applies marginal rates to separate income slices; crossing a threshold does not apply the higher rate to every euro. For a single resident with €30,000 chargeable income, the estimate is €4,100 before any unmodelled credits.
Separate income tax from social security
An income-tax result is not a complete payslip. Malta Class 1 social contributions depend on weekly wage, age/category and limits. The salary planner asks for the actual employee deductions you have checked; it does not infer them from an annual salary. If a contribution is also tax-deductible, confirm its treatment before entering it in the tax-relief field. Do not reduce employer contributions from employee cash pay.
Build a VAT invoice carefully
The standard VAT preset is 18%, with other selectable rates for eligible supplies. Choose tax-inclusive mode only when the unit price already includes VAT. A price of €118 at the standard rate contains €18 of tax and €100 net value. Rate eligibility comes from the type of supply; selecting a lower rate in a calculator does not make a transaction qualify.
Use local quotes for property planning
The mortgage tool models a fixed nominal interest rate with monthly repayments. Enter a lender quote and the actual taxes, legal fees and other purchase costs in the upfront-cost field. No Malta property-duty concession is automatically assumed. A larger deposit reduces borrowing but increases initial cash needed; an extra monthly payment reduces principal faster, subject to the lender’s prepayment terms.
Check your inputs with the right source
Use official guidance to confirm tax status and deductions, a payslip for employee contributions, and a lender quote for interest and fees. Keep these separate from hypothetical scenarios.
