Calculate worked hours and decimal time

Handle same-day or overnight shifts, subtract breaks, apply optional clock rounding and estimate gross pay.

Dates and entries stay in your browser and are only used for this calculation.

Hours worked

Ready when you are

Enter clock-in and clock-out times. Earlier end times are treated as overnight shifts.

Methodology

How this calculator works

Clock times are converted to minutes after midnight. When clock-out is not later than clock-in, 24 hours are added for an overnight shift. Optional clock rounding is applied to each endpoint before the break is subtracted. Decimal hours equal net minutes divided by 60.

Worked example

Reading the result

A 9:00 to 17:30 shift is 8 hours 30 minutes gross. After a 30-minute unpaid break, net time is 8:00, or 8.0 decimal hours.

Work-hours guide

Keep clock time and decimal time separate

Hours and minutes use base 60, while decimal hours use base 10. Convert net minutes by dividing by 60 before multiplying by an hourly rate.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How does an overnight shift work?+

If clock-out is earlier than or equal to clock-in, the calculator treats clock-out as occurring on the following day.

How are breaks handled?+

The entered unpaid break minutes are subtracted after the gross time between rounded clock-in and clock-out values is calculated.

What are decimal hours?+

Decimal hours divide net minutes by 60. For example, 7 hours 30 minutes equals 7.5 decimal hours.

Can I calculate gross pay?+

Yes. Enter an optional hourly rate. The calculator multiplies it by unrounded decimal hours and displays a result without a currency symbol.

Should I use clock rounding?+

Only choose rounding when your workplace actually applies that rule. The calculator supports nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes and shows the resulting work duration.

Important scope

The tool handles one shift of no more than 24 hours and one total break value. Gross pay excludes overtime premiums, tax, benefits and employment-law rules. Rounding should only be used when applicable. Check your employer's timekeeping policy before relying on a rounded payroll result.
