Steps to Miles Calculator

Convert a step count to miles and kilometres with a measured stride or a transparent height-based estimate.

Sports & exercise

Convert steps to miles and kilometres

Use a measured stride or a height-based estimate, then add cadence for an estimated walking time.

Methodology

How this calculator works

Distance equals step count multiplied by stride length. Custom stride is used directly; height mode estimates stride as 41.5% of height for the male profile or 41.3% for the female profile. Exact conversion uses 1 mile = 1,609.344 metres.

Worked example

Reading the result

Ten thousand steps with a 75 cm stride cover 7,500 metres, equal to 7.5 km or about 4.66 miles.

Accuracy tip

Measure several natural steps

A longer measured distance reduces the effect of a single unusual step. Use the same walking style and conditions you want to estimate.

Result checks

Use the Steps to Miles Calculator with confidence

  • Confirm the question: make sure the selected mode, units and time period match the sports & exercise decision you are trying to make. Similar-looking inputs can represent different quantities or baselines.
  • Inspect the breakdown: review intermediate values, assumptions and rounding before copying the final result. Re-enter the example or a simple known case when you need an independent reasonableness check.
  • Preserve the inputs: note the values and options used if the result will support a comparison or later calculation. Recalculate when an input changes, and use the scope section below to identify decisions that need an official standard or professional review.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How are steps converted to miles?+

Steps are multiplied by stride length to get total distance, then metres are divided by 1,609.344 to get miles.

Is stride length the same for everyone?+

No. It changes with height, pace, terrain and individual gait. A measured average stride is preferable to a general estimate.

How can I measure stride length?+

Walk a known flat distance naturally, count steps, then divide distance by step count. Repeating the measurement can improve the average.

How many miles are 10,000 steps?+

There is no single exact value because stride length varies. Enter your stride or height to estimate your own distance.

What does cadence add?+

Cadence lets the calculator estimate elapsed walking time by dividing steps by steps per minute.

Does this calculate calories burned?+

No. Calorie estimates require additional assumptions about body mass, speed, grade and physiology, so this tool focuses on distance and time.

Method source and technical review

Source: the formula, assumptions and scope documented on this page. The calculator logic is covered by automated input, boundary and result checks, and external published standards are linked where relevant. Global tools do not assume a country-specific law, tax rate or current market rate unless the page explicitly says so.

Important scope

Height-based factors are broad estimates and do not represent every gait. Walking and running strides differ, and watches may define or detect steps differently. For a more personal result, measure average stride over a known distance and use the custom-stride option.
