Methodology

How this calculator works

The calculator starts with base salary and adds entered bonus, commission, overtime and taxable benefits to build a taxable compensation view. Federal pre-tax deductions and FICA-exempt benefit deductions are separated because common 401(k)-style deferrals and Section 125/HSA-style deductions do not always affect the same tax bases. The selected 2026 standard deduction or entered itemized deduction is then used to estimate federal taxable income. Regular 2026 federal brackets calculate Income Tax, manual credits reduce tax after that calculation, Social Security and Medicare are calculated on covered FICA wages, and a manual state/local rate can be applied for planning. Post-tax deductions and extra withholding reduce take-home pay but are shown separately from actual tax.

Worked example

Reading the result

A worker with $85,000 salary, $6,000 of 401(k)-style pre-tax deductions and $2,400 of FICA-exempt benefit deductions will not have one single taxable wage number for every tax. Federal taxable income, FICA wages and cash take-home can all be different, which is why the calculator separates them instead of using one flat percentage.

Accuracy checklist

Validate your United States estimate

  1. 1Separate base cash salary, bonus, overtime, taxable benefits and employer-paid items before calculating. Use the correct pay frequency and 2026 federal payroll estimate setting, and do not subtract an employer contribution from take-home pay unless it is genuinely withheld from the employee.
  2. 2Compare gross pay, taxable pay, employee deductions and net cash as separate result lines. This makes it easier to find whether a difference comes from income tax, a capped contribution, an optional deduction or the conversion between annual and pay-period amounts.
  3. 3Check the United States estimate against an actual payslip and IRS — 2026 tax brackets and standard deductions. Payroll calendars, cumulative withholding, rounding, benefits, arrears and one-off payments can create period-by-period differences even when the annual method and inputs are reasonable.
  4. 4Save the inputs, selected options and calculation date with the result. If the estimate informs a payment, return, contract or application, rerun it when the 2026 federal payroll estimate rules or your underlying figures change and compare the updated breakdown with the earlier version.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this an exact paycheck withholding calculator?+

No. It estimates annual tax and averages take-home by period. Real withholding depends on Form W-4, employer payroll tables, pay date timing and benefit setup.

Are state taxes included?+

You can enter a manual state/local percentage or use quick planning presets, but this page does not determine each state's exact brackets, credits or city payroll rules.

Does a 401(k) contribution reduce FICA?+

Traditional 401(k) elective deferrals usually reduce federal taxable wages but generally remain subject to Social Security and Medicare. That is why this calculator separates federal pre-tax deductions from FICA-exempt benefit deductions.

What is net-to-gross mode?+

Net-to-gross estimates the base salary needed to reach a target annual take-home amount after the deductions, taxes and options entered.

Why enter taxable benefits?+

Some employer benefits or imputed income can increase taxable compensation without increasing cash salary. Keeping that separate helps explain why taxable wages and cash pay can differ.
