Methodology

How this calculator works

This paycheck calculator uses the same advanced payroll engine as the US salary calculator, but the page is organized around paycheck budgeting. It starts with annualized cash compensation, then separates federal pre-tax deductions, FICA-exempt benefit deductions, post-tax deductions, extra withholding and taxable benefits. Federal taxable income is estimated after the selected standard or itemized deduction. Social Security and Medicare are calculated from covered FICA wages, and the annual net result is converted into monthly, semi-monthly, biweekly, weekly or custom paycheck amounts.

Worked example

Reading the result

A worker paid biweekly can enter annual salary, bonus, 401(k)-style deductions, HSA or Section 125 deductions, post-tax deductions, extra withholding and a state estimate. The result shows take-home by paycheck period, annual net pay, federal Income Tax, FICA, total deductions and the taxable wage bases behind the estimate.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this an exact paycheck withholding calculator?+

No. It estimates annual tax and converts the result into paycheck periods. Actual employer withholding depends on Form W-4, payroll tables, pay date timing, benefit setup and state or local rules.

Can I calculate biweekly take-home pay?+

Yes. Choose biweekly in the result period selector. You can also use weekly, semi-monthly, monthly, annual or a custom number of paychecks per year.

Does it include Social Security and Medicare?+

Yes. Employee FICA is estimated separately from federal Income Tax because Social Security and Medicare use different wage bases and rules.

Can I include 401(k), HSA or health insurance deductions?+

Yes. The calculator separates federal pre-tax deductions from FICA-exempt benefit deductions so users can model common 401(k), HSA and Section 125-style situations more transparently.

Does it include state tax?+

You can use quick state/local planning presets or enter a manual percentage. Exact state paycheck engines should be built separately for states with complex withholding rules.

Why is net-to-gross included?+

Net-to-gross helps estimate what gross annual salary may be needed to reach a target take-home amount under the selected paycheck and deduction assumptions.
