Methodology

How this calculator works

To add standard VAT, the calculator multiplies the net amount by 5% and adds that VAT to the amount. To remove VAT from an inclusive total, it divides the total by 1.05; the difference between the entered total and that net amount is the VAT component. Extracting 5% by simply multiplying an inclusive total by 5% would be incorrect.

Worked example

Reading the result

For an AED 1,000 net price, 5% VAT is AED 50 and the inclusive total is AED 1,050. Working backwards from AED 1,050 returns the same AED 1,000 net amount and AED 50 VAT.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What standard VAT rate does the calculator use?+

It uses the UAE standard VAT rate of 5%.

How do I remove VAT from an inclusive price?+

Divide the inclusive total by 1.05 to find the net amount, then subtract the net amount from the total.

Does every UAE transaction carry 5% VAT?+

No. Some supplies may be zero-rated, exempt or outside scope, so classification must be checked separately.

Important scope

Arithmetic for a standard-rated supply only. It does not decide whether a supply is standard-rated, zero-rated, exempt or outside the scope of UAE VAT, and it is not a VAT return or tax-invoice generator. This calculator provides a planning estimate, not personal financial or tax advice.
