Use the stress-test rate to see what the same loan could look like if rates rise. Offset balance is treated as reducing the interest-bearing balance for planning only; actual offset and revolving-credit rules vary by lender.

Methodology

How this calculator works

The calculator uses a standard principal-and-interest amortisation model. It converts your selected repayment frequency into weekly, fortnightly or monthly periods, calculates the scheduled repayment from the loan amount, interest rate and term, then runs a repayment schedule that applies extra repayments, a one-off lump sum, estimated annual fees and an optional offset balance. The stress-test repayment uses the same loan and term at the higher rate you enter, so you can compare affordability if interest rates rise.

Worked example

Reading the result

For example, a borrower can compare a 30-year NZ$650,000 loan at 6.25% with monthly repayments against fortnightly repayments plus an extra amount. The result shows the estimated repayment, total interest, payments saved, LVR and the payment at a higher test rate. This helps answer practical searches such as NZ mortgage repayment calculator, fortnightly mortgage calculator NZ, extra mortgage repayment calculator NZ and home loan affordability estimate.

Accuracy checklist

Validate your New Zealand estimate

  1. 1Enter the amount actually financed after any deposit or initial payment, then use the lender's quoted nominal rate, term and fee schedule. Keep purchase costs, insurance, taxes and recurring charges separate unless the loan agreement confirms that they are financed.
  2. 2Compare the scheduled payment with total interest, fees, cash needed upfront and the remaining balance—not only the headline monthly amount. Test a higher rate or lower income as a stress scenario, and check whether extra payments trigger penalties or change the lender's schedule.
  3. 3The New Zealand calculation is an amortisation and affordability illustration, not an approval or product offer. Reconcile it with a written lender quote, the applicable 2026/27 settings terms and any local disclosure requirements before making a borrowing commitment.
  4. 4Save the inputs, selected options and calculation date with the result. If the estimate informs a payment, return, contract or application, rerun it when the 2026/27 settings rules or your underlying figures change and compare the updated breakdown with the earlier version.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can this calculate weekly or fortnightly NZ mortgage repayments?+

Yes. Choose weekly, fortnightly or monthly frequency. The calculator changes the number of repayment periods and shows the estimated payment for that frequency.

Does it show the effect of extra mortgage repayments?+

Yes. Add an extra repayment for the selected frequency. The result estimates interest saved, payments saved and the shorter payoff time compared with the standard schedule.

How is LVR calculated?+

LVR is estimated as loan amount divided by property price. It helps you understand deposit position, but banks may calculate usable equity and acceptable LVR differently.

Does the offset balance match every NZ bank product?+

No. Offset and revolving-credit products have different rules. This calculator treats the offset balance as reducing the interest-bearing balance for a planning estimate only.

Does this include bank fees and legal costs?+

It includes only the annual account or package fee you enter. One-off application, valuation, legal, insurance, break and product-specific fees are not automatically included.

Is the stress-test repayment the same as bank approval?+

No. It is a simple higher-rate repayment scenario. Lenders also review income, expenses, debt, credit history, deposit source, property type and their own servicing buffer.

Important scope

This is an education and planning calculator, not a mortgage approval, lending quote or financial advice. It assumes a constant rate, does not model future refixes, break fees, cashback clawbacks, insurance, valuation/legal costs, bank-specific serviceability rules or responsible-lending checks.
