Methodology

How this calculator works

Hourly pay is multiplied by paid hours per week. Weekly pay is then multiplied by paid weeks per year; the annual total is divided by 12 for a comparable monthly average.

Worked example

Reading the result

NZ$30 an hour for 40 paid hours over 52 weeks equals NZ$62,400 gross a year. If four weeks are unpaid, entering 48 weeks reduces the estimate to NZ$57,600.

Accuracy checklist

Validate your New Zealand estimate

  1. 1Separate base cash salary, bonus, overtime, taxable benefits and employer-paid items before calculating. Use the correct pay frequency and 2026/27 settings setting, and do not subtract an employer contribution from take-home pay unless it is genuinely withheld from the employee.
  2. 2Compare gross pay, taxable pay, employee deductions and net cash as separate result lines. This makes it easier to find whether a difference comes from income tax, a capped contribution, an optional deduction or the conversion between annual and pay-period amounts.
  3. 3Check the New Zealand estimate against an actual payslip and Employment New Zealand pay and wages guidance. Payroll calendars, cumulative withholding, rounding, benefits, arrears and one-off payments can create period-by-period differences even when the annual method and inputs are reasonable.
  4. 4Save the inputs, selected options and calculation date with the result. If the estimate informs a payment, return, contract or application, rerun it when the 2026/27 settings rules or your underlying figures change and compare the updated breakdown with the earlier version.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Why divide annual pay by 12?+

It provides a monthly average for comparison. Hourly workers may not receive the same amount in every calendar month.

Should contractors enter 52 weeks?+

Only if they expect to bill all 52 weeks. Reduce paid weeks for holidays, illness and gaps between contracts.

Does annual pay include holiday pay?+

Not automatically. Enter the paid weeks and ordinary hours that match your arrangement, then review your employment agreement.
