Methodology

How this calculator works

The calculator first applies quantity and discount, treats shipping as taxable or outside scope according to the selected option, then either adds VAT to an exclusive base or extracts VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount.

Worked example

Reading the result

If an invoice total already includes VAT, choose extract mode. The calculator divides the taxable amount by 1.15 to estimate the VAT-exclusive base and shows the VAT component separately.

Accuracy checklist

Validate your Mauritius estimate

  1. 1Confirm whether the amount is tax-exclusive or already tax-inclusive before entering it. Check the supply classification, selected rate, discounts, quantity and delivery treatment against Mauritius Revenue Authority VAT; a mathematically correct result can still be wrong when the transaction uses a reduced, zero or exempt treatment.
  2. 2Keep the net price, tax amount and gross total as separate figures when checking an invoice. If several rates apply, calculate each group independently and add the subtotals instead of using one blended rate that cannot be reconciled with the invoice lines.
  3. 3Treat the Mauritius result as invoice arithmetic for 2026 planning, not as a registration or filing decision. Confirm tax-point timing, place-of-supply rules, input-tax recovery and sector-specific treatment with the authority or a qualified adviser when those questions affect the transaction.
  4. 4Save the inputs, selected options and calculation date with the result. If the estimate informs a payment, return, contract or application, rerun it when the 2026 planning rules or your underlying figures change and compare the updated breakdown with the earlier version.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the default Mauritius VAT rate?+

The calculator defaults to 15% and keeps the rate editable for special scenarios or future updates.

Can it remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price?+

Yes. Use extract mode to estimate the net base and VAT amount from an inclusive total.

Does it support discounts and quantity?+

Yes. Quantity and discount are applied before VAT so invoice math is clearer.

Are all supplies taxable?+

No. Some items may be exempt, zero-rated or outside scope, so the result should be treated as invoice math rather than tax advice.
