Understanding a UAE salary package

Two job offers with the same headline total can produce different statutory calculations when their basic salary and allowances are split differently.

Basic salary

Basic salary is the fixed amount identified as basic pay before allowances and benefits. It deserves separate attention because statutory gratuity and overtime calculations commonly refer to basic wage.

Cash allowances

Housing, transport and other recurring cash allowances increase the monthly cash total. A clear offer should identify whether each amount is fixed, reimbursed against actual expense or conditional on a particular arrangement.

Benefits are not always cash

Medical insurance, flights, accommodation supplied by the employer, schooling and bonuses may be valuable without appearing as a recurring cash allowance. The salary-package calculator excludes them rather than assigning an invented value.

Compare offers consistently

Start with monthly and annual cash totals, then compare the basic-salary share, non-cash benefits, bonus conditions and possible deductions. Employees who remain tax resident elsewhere should separately consider obligations outside the UAE.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is basic salary the same as gross salary?+

No. A gross cash package may combine basic salary with housing, transport and other allowances.

Does a higher allowance always improve gratuity?+

Not under the standard formula used by our tool, because gratuity is based on basic salary rather than the full allowance-inclusive package.
