Adding VAT is straightforward

For a VAT-exclusive price, multiply the taxable base by 12.5% and add that amount to the invoice. The calculator also handles quantity, discount and shipping so the result is closer to how a real invoice is prepared.

Removing VAT is different

If a price already includes VAT, you do not multiply the total by 12.5%. You divide the inclusive amount by 1.125 to find the VAT-exclusive base, then subtract the base from the total to find the VAT component.

Not every supply is standard-rated

Some supplies may be zero-rated, exempt or outside scope. This is why the VAT calculator lets users edit the rate and shipping treatment, and why invoice decisions should be checked against the official Inland Revenue guidance.

VAT registration matters for businesses

VAT is a business compliance issue, not only a price calculation. Businesses should check the registration threshold, invoicing rules, record keeping and return requirements before treating VAT as collectible.
