Five federal brackets
For 2026 the federal rates are 14%, 20.5%, 26%, 29% and 33%. The first threshold is $58,523 and the highest rate begins above $258,482. A federal income tax calculator should show the bracket split instead of only a single tax total.
How marginal tax works
Each rate applies only to the slice of taxable income inside that bracket. Earning one more dollar above a threshold does not move all earlier income into the higher rate, which is why marginal rate and effective rate are different.
Deductions come before credits
Deductions such as eligible RRSP deductions reduce taxable income before the bracket calculation. Credits usually reduce tax after the bracket calculation. Mixing those two steps is a common reason rough tax estimates become misleading.
Basic Personal Amount
The maximum federal Basic Personal Amount is $16,452 and the minimum is $14,829. Higher-income taxpayers receive a reduced amount across the upper federal bracket range. The amount becomes a non-refundable credit at the lowest federal rate.
Tax paid, refund and balance due
Payroll withholding, instalments or other tax already paid should be entered separately. If tax paid is higher than the federal tax estimate, the calculator can show a refund estimate. If it is lower, it can show a balance-due estimate.
Province or territory is separate
The province or territory of residence on 31 December generally determines the additional local tax system. Credits, surtaxes and health premiums can make the final result more complex than adding two headline rates, so federal-only and full salary calculators should be treated as different tools.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Does entering a new bracket tax all income at the higher rate?+
No. Only the portion above each threshold is charged at the next marginal rate.
Is federal tax the complete Canadian Income Tax bill?+
No. Provincial or territorial Income Tax normally applies in addition, and Quebec has its own interaction with federal tax.
Why does tax already paid not reduce taxable income?+
Withholding or instalment tax is a payment toward tax. It is compared with the final estimate to show refund or balance due, but it is not a deduction.
Do RRSP contributions reduce federal tax?+
RRSP deductions can reduce taxable income, which can lower the federal tax calculated in the brackets. The exact deductible amount depends on the taxpayer's available contribution room and return details.
Are dividends handled exactly by a simple federal calculator?+
No. Canadian dividends can involve gross-up and dividend tax credits. A planning calculator can include manual income and credits, but exact return software or professional review is needed for filing.
