Take-home pay in Australia

Take-home pay starts with gross salary and subtracts the amounts withheld or deducted before money reaches your bank account.

Income tax is progressive

An annual estimate applies the resident rates to each slice of taxable income. Employers instead use withholding schedules for weekly, fortnightly, monthly or quarterly payments, so payslip rounding may differ.

Medicare is not identical for everyone

The standard Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income, but low-income reductions, family thresholds and exemptions can change it. The Medicare levy surcharge is a separate issue and is not included in Ezivo Calculator’s simple pay estimate.

Where super fits

Employer super guarantee is normally paid in addition to ordinary earnings, not removed from after-tax cash pay. A total remuneration package quoted as inclusive of super needs to be separated before estimating take-home salary.

What can change the result

HELP repayments, salary sacrifice, tax offsets, deductions, multiple jobs and residency status can all affect final withholding or tax payable.
