Start with ordinary paid hours
Multiply the hourly rate by paid hours in a normal week. Unpaid meal breaks should not be counted as paid hours unless the applicable arrangement says otherwise.
Choose paid weeks carefully
Using 52 weeks suits continuous paid employment. Casuals and contractors should reduce the number for unpaid leave, seasonal gaps or time between engagements.
Penalty rates and loadings
Awards and agreements can provide weekend, public-holiday, overtime or casual loadings. Enter a blended hourly rate only if you have already calculated those differences.
Move from gross to take-home
The annual conversion is before income tax, Medicare, HELP and other deductions. Use the Australian pay calculator for a separate after-tax estimate.
