Methodology

How this calculator works

The calculator uses a reducing-balance amortization formula from loan amount, annual rate and term, then adds optional fees, monthly charges, extra payments and one-off prepayment. It also compares estimated loan cost with income for a debt-to-income planning view.

Worked example

Reading the result

For a GH₵50,000 loan over three years, the calculator estimates the base instalment, total interest, fees and whether extra payments shorten the payoff period.

Accuracy checklist

Validate your Ghana estimate

  1. 1Enter the amount actually financed after any deposit or initial payment, then use the lender's quoted nominal rate, term and fee schedule. Keep purchase costs, insurance, taxes and recurring charges separate unless the loan agreement confirms that they are financed.
  2. 2Compare the scheduled payment with total interest, fees, cash needed upfront and the remaining balance—not only the headline monthly amount. Test a higher rate or lower income as a stress scenario, and check whether extra payments trigger penalties or change the lender's schedule.
  3. 3The Ghana calculation is an amortisation and affordability illustration, not an approval or product offer. Reconcile it with a written lender quote, the applicable Loan planning estimate terms and any local disclosure requirements before making a borrowing commitment.
  4. 4Save the inputs, selected options and calculation date with the result. If the estimate informs a payment, return, contract or application, rerun it when the Loan planning estimate rules or your underlying figures change and compare the updated breakdown with the earlier version.
